...Pontiac

And so it ends... After 84 years General Motors has decided to end the production of Pontiac. The sad thing is I thought that they already ended it. GM is still trying to cut its debt and along with many other brands they had to sell or end Pontiac just had to bite the dust. Since I have been alive the only thing that the ever made that seemed cool and acceptable was the Firebird and the Trans AM, other than that they just seemed like horribly styled Chevrolets. While those with Pontiacs can still get them serviced and worked on at any GM dealership and if under warranty it will still be honored, after this weekend any Pontiac left on a dealership will be considered used. I cannot say that I personally am sad to see this brand go, it was already dead. Most people still think of the Pontiacs of the 60's, mainly the GTO, but that was decades ago and when they decided to make a new GTO it looked more like a Grand AM with a body kit, shame. As long as Chevy, Cadillac and Buick are still being produced, no other brand under GM is safe. Actually I could see Buick going away within a decade or 2, what is the purpose of it...really? Anyway I am giving this news a Digit Up because I am sure this will cause something semi major to happen at GM, although I still will not care, this brand needed to die.

...The Rally to Restore Sanity And / Or Fear

I honestly do not know what this was about. I watched most of it and I thought, "What is the point?" Really what was it? Both Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart pretty much put on a live variety show that just happened to take place in Washington D.C. and mention politics. Some of it was corny and cheesy and very scripted. It was a back and fourth between Stewart and Colbert over Fear vs. Sanity and nothing was actually solved. Towards the end Stewart got serious and addressed the problems as he saw it in speech, which can be seen below.

With an estimated 215,000-250,000 people there no one knows what, if anything, this rally achieved. I would like to think it was just a nice outing with people who wanted to have a good laugh or two. Or maybe it was more like a live political comedy show? I am not sure actually, I am not sure the people there even know...or the host. For that reason I am going to have to give this all a Digit Down.

...Univision

Univision, the Spanish language network, is set to top the American networks in viewership within this decade, according to census. With about 50 million more Hispanics in America than there were a decade ago and with Univision showing a 14% jump in viewers this year, compared to 3% by the big 4 (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) it is only a matter of time. Recently Univision passed The CW to become 5th. Some think that even without the future growth of Hispanics in America Univision would still become number 1. In areas, such as the 18-49 year old range, Univison could possibly lead on some nights, it is very close on Friday nights as it is. This means good things for them when it comes to future sponsors. In the past major sponsors have not been willing to place ads on the network, 2/3 to be exact, but now that could, will change. This will definitely do damage to the big 4 who have seen profits fall due to the recession and sponsors deciding to find more creative ways to reach people, especially since most people can fast forward through commercials now. Univision is set to become a major player in the television world. I have no clue what this means for the rest of us. They are a Spanish language channel so it is not like many English only speaking Americans will be tuning i to watch, but it could change things up on the other networks, maybe they will have better shows, less police dramas...maybe. I am giving Univision a Digit Up

...Marie Claire writer Maura Kelly

This chick is getting beat up by the media and large Americans for her point of view. What is her point of view? Fat people are gross. She wrote an article in Marie Claire, "Should Fatties Get A Room?", about the new show "Mike & Molly", a show about a heavy-set couple who met at their Overeaters Anonymous group. she posed this question: "Think people feel uncomfortable when they see overweight people making out on television?" Her answer was YES. She wrote, “I think I'd be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other ... because I'd be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything. To be brutally honest, even in real life, I find it aesthetically displeasing to watch a very, very fat person simply walk across a room.” Of course people got really pissed. Marie Claire received 28,000 emails about the article, and of course they wanted her to be fired. Now what most people did not know is that Kelly was anorexic, not anymore. She feels very strongly about this issue, weight and health, and so I can see why she was probably pissed. Are we getting too comfortable with obese people on television? There are roughly 93 million overweight Americans, but we should not help the cause so much, we do not want more obese people. But back to Kelly. Maura Kelly later apologizes for her comments. Now for me that was horrible. I think you should own up to whatever you said. She should have stuck to her guns and taken the bullet. Now how can I take anything she says seriously? If you give under pressure then you never really believed in what you wrote Maura. I understand that in this economy job security is important and I guess she did not want to lose her job but if that were the case she should have written a nice little fluff piece. I am giving Maura Kelly a Digit Down for apologizing.

10/29-Jack Lalanne, Scott St James

Jack Lalanne-"The Godfather of Fitness"

Jack LaLanne is an American fitness, exercise, and nutritional expert, celebrity, lecturer, and motivational speaker who is widely referred to as "The Godfather of Fitness". LaLanne gained worldwide recognition for his success as a chiropractor and bodybuilder, and for his incredible and prodigious acts of strength and endurance. Through his career, LaLanne has won numerous awards including the Horatio Alger Award from the Association of Distinguished Americans, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Hall of Fame.

Early Life

Jack LaLanne was born September 26, 1914 in San Francisco, CA and admittedly, during his childhood days was addicted to sugar and junk foods. At age 15, young Jack heard Paul Bragg speak on health and nutrition which had such a powerful influence, it motivated Jack to focus on his diet and exercise habits.
Jack was truly a pioneer, as he studied Henry Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body and concentrated on bodybuilding, chiropractic medicine, and weightlifting, something virtually unheard of in the 1930s.

Health Clubs

In 1936 LaLanne opened his own health spa in Oakland, CA, and dedicated his life to encouraging people to better themselves through exercise and fitness. LaLanne designed the world's first leg extension machines, pulley machines using cables, and weight selectors, now a standard in the fitness industry.

Scott St. James began his acting career with a role in Heart Of A Champion: The Ray Mancini Story. Since then, he has appeared in dozens of motion pictures and TV series including Everybody Loves Raymond, ER and Jimmy Kimmel Live! His national television commercial credits include roles for American Express, Pepsi and Honda Motor Company. A true renaissance man, Scott began his career as an award-winning radio personality, enjoying tremendous success at stations all across the country, including St. Louis powerhouse KMOX and KMPC and KIIS-FM in Los Angeles, working with legendary personalities Robert W. Morgan and Rick Dees. Along the way he picked up multiple Golden Mike and Mark Twain Awards for commentary writing. His daily morning commentaries on Arrow 93FM covered a broad spectrum of topics from sports to entertainment to politics, and over a period of nine years, raised an eyebrow or two. In the 80’s, Scott was also the on-camera Sports Director at LA’s KCAL-TV, Channel 9. Contact Scott St. James via e-mail: scottstjames@sbcglobal.net

...Miley Cyrus

Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus are getting a divorce after 17 years of marriage and 5 kids. Of course they are the parents of the oddly famous Miley Cyrus. This could possibly be the best news for Miley and her career. Think about it... She now will probably get more attention because of it and more people will buy her albums and merchandise. Also she has been wanting to break out of the shadow of the Disney Network and Hannah Montana so now she will have a legitimate reason to be a "bad girl". She can say she comes from a broken home, somewhat true, and she can be bad and angry and upset and hold it in and let it out on stage and in her music, wonderful. Billy and Tish really will be fine, they are both attractive for their age and they have money and can easily get another mate. I thin they should stay together. Maybe Billy wants more, more money, more women, more fame or maybe Tish does, who knows and who cares. All I know is that Miley will get he most press out of it all and it will help her out in the long run. Digit Up to Miley.

...Paul the Octopus

I have sad news people. Paul the Octopus has died. The octopus who rose to fame after predicting every single game correctly in the World Cup passed away of natural causes in his tank at the ripe old age of 2 1/2. I was a fan, and so was Spain and many others around the world. I was glad when he retired, it is always great to go out on top. I still wish that the aquarium would have mad ea quick buck or two...millions off of him, but they had principals and stuck to them. There is talk that Paul may get a statue or some sort of shrine, which I could see. I am sure he will get some sort of dedication at the aquarium and he will live on forever and ever in pop culture history as well. I am giving this news a Digit Down.

...Nike Commercial

The NBA basketball season starts today and of course their had to be a little controversy before it tipped off. Nike just released a commercial [See Below] staring the infamous LeBron James. In the commercial he somewhat mocks his "decision" moment and specifically mentions one of his famous critics, Charles Barkley. In the commercial he only mentioned shoes once, and they were only shown for about 5 seconds. This was almost a short movie. If it were black and white it could have come across like an American version of a foreign film. I am sure that this was not meant to sell shoes, and in that sens it is doing its job. People once again are talking about LeBron and Miami and basketball. Of course the Heat will be playing today and I am sure the ratings will be beyond high for their game and I am sure this commercial will play. I am just waiting to hear what Charles has to say about being mentioned in his commercial. I am going to give this commercial a surprising Digit Up. It is doing its job and it is going to only help propel LeBron, blah, and in a sense propel Nike.

...The Oakland Raiders

Wow! The Oakland Raiders scored 59 points, the most in the team's history. They scored these points on the Denver Broncos, their longtime rival, holding them to only 14 points. The running-back alone scored 4 times on them. This is pretty good because the Raiders have been the laughing stock of the NFL, well the Lions might be worse. Everyone knew they had the potential, they just though tit was left in the 80's, joke. In a 7 game stretch last season the Raiders managed to only score 55 points, but in 3 hours they topped that. They improved their record to 3-4, second in the AFC West. Could they be Super Bowl contenders? Possibly actually, and that is a tad scary. If they were to make it to the Super Bowl, or dare I say win it, this could make Al Davis' dream of moving back to Los Angeles a little closer to reality, especially since Magic Johnson is looking to buy a team (Jaguars) and bring them to Los Angeles, and even more so because Al Davis said he would not sell the team or retire until the Raiders won another Super Bowl, which at this moment in time is not longer a pipe dream. Digit Up Raiders.

...Red Celery

What do you do when you are a celery farmer and your product is not selling? You alter it and make it red to attract more customers of course! Apparently the creators of this celery are trying to "jazz" things up because green was boring and since we eat with our eyes the color should help sell more. The product will be hitting your supermarket December 1st, in time for the Christmas season. This makes no sense at all! Besides the fact hat it kind of looks like a radish, what does altering food and good sales have in common? Nothing at all. With many Americans today looking for healthier, less processed and more natural foods so altering natural food to make it anything less than NATURAL, is a dumb idea. Celery is not meant to be a fun food or a happy food, it is a common diet food and a side dish food, or the food that come with your order of hot wings. Deal with it celery people. I am giving red celery a Digit Down.

...The Talk

I had heard about this show for months. The controversy of the show featuring a lesbian mother, but that died down a day after I heard about it. The Talk premiered Monday and I watched it, I watched all week long after I found out what time it came on. No one really seemed to care. Barbra Walters mentioned it, sort of, on "The View" Monday when she said the reason their show is so good and why others try to copy... Oh Snap! Well After watching this week I can see why no one really cared, the show is boring. It has its funny moments but it is boring. The show is for mothers, and mothers can be boring, especially mothers of young children. Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Leah Remini, Holly Robinson Peete, and Marissa Jaret Winokur are the stars of the show and they seem to get along, for now. During their interviews of guest like Jennifer Lopez and Christie Brinkley they played softball, not the actual game, but with the questions. I understand that they are a new show and I guess they are not trying to ruffle feathers, but c'mon ladies, do something! Julie's husband is the main boss at CBS so it is not like the show has anything to worry about. I doubt I will continue to watch next week. I need more substance, more meat. Honestly I do not see this show lasting that long... Digit Down.

...The Hangover 2

Mel Gibson just cannot catch a break. It was widely reported that he would be making a cameo in the new movie " The Hangover 2". Now just 4 days after that came out it is being reported that his scenes were cut from the movie. Director Todd Phillips had this to say, "I thought Mel would have been great in the movie and I had the full backing of [WB president] Jeff Robinov and his team. But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew." Apparently Zach Galifianakis had a problem with Mel being in the movie. In a podcast interview he said this, "But a movie you're acting in, you don't have a lot of control -- you just show up and vomit your lines out. I'm not the boss. I'm in a deep protest right now with a movie I'm working on, up in arms about something. But I can't get the guys to [listen] ... I'm not making any leeway." No mention of Mel per se but it was implied. On the other hand some think that the backlash from the media was a little to blame if not the whole reason why his scenes were cut. Some believe that if the media had not said anything about it no one would have cared until the movie was out, too late then, and that he would have been well received. I think that this is bad for Mel. This was supposed to be his mini comeback, like when Mike Tyson was cameoed in the 1st movie. Now Mel must wait for his other movie with Jodie Foster to come out, which could be a failure because now people will not have a proper transition into it. I am giving Mel's cut a Digit Down because I would have loved to have seen him as a tattoo artist. Maybe it will be in the DVD, who knows right?

...Uganda

While we are somewhat celebrating the possible dismissal of Don't ask, Don't tell but still struggling to help gay kids get through being bullied there is a country in Africa that is going through something much more than a purple shirt can solve. The nation of Uganda introduced a bill a year ago that would have made it legal to sentence homosexuals to death for some homosexual acts and prison for others. This was brought on a some Christian ministry visited the country claiming they could turn homosexuals into heterosexuals. Many Christian groups around the world have dismissed the claims and the bill that Uganda introduced. After many other nations and organizations condemned the bill it was shelved. Well it is a year later and although the bill never became a law many homosexuals are living in fear. A magazine printed an article with the names and pictures of Uganda's "Top 100 Homosexuals" and told it's readers to hang them. A year after the bill was introduced 20 homosexuals have been attacked and 17 have been put in prison. Uganda is a conservative nation of about 32 million people. Homosexual acts are considered illegal there as well. The magazine that printed the issue was told to stop publishing, but not because of the issue, because it did not have a license to print, shame. In the magazine it spread a lot of propaganda such as homosexuals had a deadly disease and it could not be stop and the one that we all have heard, that the homosexuals were going into schools and recruiting young kids, so far they recruited 1 million. So far 4 men from the list have been attacked, no deaths yet though. Many Ugandans are living in fear of being outed and put in prison or beaten or killed. This is a sad truth but many nations in Africa are like this. It may be 2010 here but that has yet to reach that Continent. Here in America we worry about gays in the military and gay marriage, but around the world they cannot even live a life without possibly being killed! The same goes for the Middle East as well, the Muslim countries that is. I cannot fathom this life, but I will try. I am thankful that I live here in a nation that may not be perfect but it is light years ahead of some other countries. We can only do so much here because we have our own problems, many, and we are no longer the superpower we used to be. Hopefully int he future someone or some organization will take action and put an end to this not only in Uganda but other nations like them. I am giving Uganda 2 Digits Down.

...Tom Bosley

Sad news in TV Land today. Actor Tom Bosley has died at the age of 83 due to heart failure. He was best known for his role as Howard "Mr. C" Cunningham on Happy Days. I remember watching him on television as a child, on Happy Days of course. That was when Nick at Nite was good and actually showed good old television shows and not just shows that failed to stay afloat on television a few years ago and shows that just ended and can be seen on any other channel but for some reason Nick thinks that running marathons of them work so much better, but I digress. I saw him periodically on shows and commercials but I did not know he was 83 or that he was going to die of heart failure, especially since he lost weight recently as well. I am sure his family and cast members and the rest of Hollywood are truly saddened by this news on the heels of another American television parental icon's death over the weekend. I am talking about Barbara Billingsley who played June Cleaver in "Leave It To Beaver." I am giving this a Digit Down because as we know death is rarely ever a good thing.

...The Crystal Cathedral

Although this is not the 1st church to close or go under during this recession, this has to be one of the most well recognized to do so. The Crystal Cathedral in Southern California, known for its "Hour of Power" shows, has filed for bankruptcy due to debts that exceed more than $43 million. It has a mortgage of $36 million and owes more than $7 million to vendors of many sorts for things over the years. The church had been negotiating a repayment plan with it's vendors but a string of lawsuits threw that out of the window. With its 10,000 members and millions of viewers around the world the church is trying to stay away from credit and is only using the nearly $2 million it receives monthly from members, donations and revenue. The church also sold some land and property to stay afloat. Hopefully the church does emerge from this shinier and newer and with a better sense of financial responsibility. I do not want to see this beautiful church go down and have this palace like cathedral possibly turned over into the wrong hands. I am giving this news a Digit Down for sure.

...Jackass 3D

Are you kidding me? This movie made $50 million this weekend! This is the best October opening for any film ever! his would also be the 2nd best opening this year, Inception was 1st with $63 million. This movie was expected to take in around $30 million, but something must have clicked and fans rushed to see it. It could be the final film of the franchise so I am sure that helped. This movie finally knocked "The Social Network" out of 1st and into 3rd. I did not see this movie, I am not a movie person, if you knew me then you would have already known that... This is major when compared to the other movies. The 1st opened with $23 million and finished with $64 million. The 2nd with $29 million and finished with $73 million. So as you can see not only is this a huge opening but the finish could be just as huge. I hope they do not get any ideas to make a 4th because in all honesty the 3D aspect of the movie totally helped with the overall total, without it probably would have opened at $30 million or less. Any who I am still giving the movie a Digit Up for breaking records and for having a great weekend.

...GPS Tracking Devices

Yasir Afifi is a 20 year old computer salesman and college student in San Francisco. He took his car in for an oil change and the mechanic noticed a strange wire hanging down. He followed the wire to a magnet. The were both confused so they posted a picture of the item online in hopes that someone would be able to tell them what it was. Two days later the FBI showed up to Afifi's apartment and demanded he give the equipment back. It turns out the equipment was a GPS tracking device that the FBI installed on his car without his permission or notice. Apparently in the state of California there is no need for a warrant to put one of these GPS' on a vehicle of a suspected terrorist, drug dealer, etc. In many states the law is different. They believe that the technology is an invasion of privacy and unnecessary. They also believe that the same information could be gathered by following the car of the suspect or by gaining a search warrant. Due tot he fact that the U.S. Supreme Court has a history of voting in favor of warrantless searches there is no way that Afifi can win a lawsuit if he chose to file one. As long as he drove his car on public roads the law is a tad skewed in the FBI's favor. However this is gaining a lot of attention and a lot of debate over privacy and surveillance laws. In this post 9/11 world many things have taken the backseat and the 1st t go was privacy. It can be assumed that we will never get it aback and that is the end of that, but every so often we gain a little, and I mean a little, back. I doubt this will be the case for that though In the end Afifi will just have to settle for being, what some are calling, a victim of racial profiling. I am going to give the FBI a Digit Down. Although it s their job to protect us, I do not want to live in fear. These days a simple e-mail could land you on a no fly list, and now I have to worry about my car being tracked as well! Maybe I should not post this, I could wake up with a tracking device under my car or my phone could be tapped. If so I guess I will just have to deal with it...

...The Hulk

In another desperate and mindless attempt by a television company, ABC is getting ready to to bring back The Incredible Hulk in a new TV series, "Hulk". Apparently they were running down the list of possible past comics and comic shows and The Hulk stood out. Why are they doing this? It will fail for sure, just like the movies. I think this is beyond desperate and that this just shows how stupid Hollywood is becoming. With the merging in of a generation of nerds and geeks that grew up watching these shows and now they want their children or nieces and nephews to watch them it is becoming a dull dull world. You can blame Spider-Man and its success for this. Ever since that franchise took off we have had at least one former comic movie come out like clockwork every Summer. ABC does not do shows like this well, actually no one does. Maybe SiFi, but who watches that channel? ABC has a show now, "No Ordinary Family" and it is on he verge of being cancelled, actually by the time you read this it could be cancelled. This is a waste of time and effort and money. No creativity, everything is the same now. I am giving this show and ABC a Digit Down.

...MTV Town Hall

I applaud the President for his willingness to include young Americans in the political process and for listening to their voices with real concern. However I do not understand the purpose of the MTV Town Hall that took place. It could have been pretty good, but it was only an hour long. It was full of your typical rhetoric and whatnot, but some of the questions were good and made you think. A lot of questions were Tweeted in, but few were read. Bullying, bipartisanship, the economy, education and gay rights were all talked about. This event took over 3 channels, MTV, BET and CMT. I think it hit every teen demographic possible, minus those who may be into C-Span or the Biography channel. Yet while there were good talking points, it did feel a tad like an election rally, although he did not mention anything of the sort, which brings me back to why. Why was this held now, on this date, at that time. Okay the time makes sense, but still why? I have yet to hear why or figure out why, it does not frustrate me but it makes me wonder...why hahaha. I am going to give this a Digit Up just this once because I think it probably made those young Americans there feel as if they were being listened too...important even, and that is always a plus.

I do not have much to say about it at all. Fall is not the best time of year. Things feel suspended and nothing goes forward or back but you have to find ways to motivate yourself daily or else you will become a victim of the suspension. Basically Fall is blah, a long blah. Maybe I was just tired today, along with every other day since Fall has started. That is a possibility, but I doubt it. Maye I am just having one of those days. Who knows and who cares. I am just waiting for Winter to come so that I can freeze and open presents. Until then it will all feel a little blah. Digit Down.

...Christina Aguilera

A day late and a dollar short...or just on time. Christina Aguilera and her husband Jordan Bratman ave split up after 5 years of marriage. They are officially living apart and a divorce may happen in the future. A friend of the family said that over the last 6 months that they have become less like husband and wife and more like friends. I wonder what she means by that because your spouse is supposed to be your friend so what is the problem? I think people are totally losing the whole meaning of marriages and are looking for fairy tales and happy endings, bu this is life, real life, and marriages have rough patches that can last a day or two or up to a few years. I am giving this a Digit Down because it just does not make sense and they should just stick to it. Although if she does get divorced I hope she goes out and party and becomes relevant again.

...Courteney Cox

Courteney Cox and David Arquette have decided to get a divorce after 11 years of marriage. The couple released a rather lengthy statement, "We have agreed to a trial separation that dates back for some time. The reason for this separation is to better understand ourselves and the qualities we need in a partner and for our marriage. We remain best friends and responsible parents to our daughter and we still love each other deeply. As we go though this process we are determined to use kindness and understanding to get through this together. We are comfortable with the boundaries that we have established for each other during this separation and we hope that our friends, family, fans and the media also show us respect, dignity, understanding and love at this time as well." I was saddened by this news, I thought they were going to make it. Then this burst of happiness exploded inside of me. Think of all of the fun stories we will be reading about when Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox go to the clubs and hang out and start living the real Cougar Town life! Can you imagine that? This is going to be perfect. Of course this may not happen for a year or so but when it happens I will be there. So really when you think about it there are 2 winners, Us and Jennifer Aniston. I am going to give this a Digit Down because divorce is not cool, but I am going to be secretly giving it a Digit Up in my head.

...Health Care Waivers

Here we go again The controversial health care plan that had all of America abuzz is doing it again. With almost 1 million employees about to lose their health care coverage, 30 companies we given waivers. The waivers were given in order to make sure that they employees did not lose their coverage, because their employer threatened to drop them, and to make sure that they did not have to pay high premiums out of their own pocket. Some of the companies that received these waivers were: McDonald's, Jack in the Box, Aetna and Cigna. The law says that employers and their insurer have to offer an annual coverage limit of least $750,000 by 2011, $1.25 million by 2012 and to $2 million by 2013. McDonald's had this to say, "We remain in conversations with our current provider and are confident that we'll continue to provide health care coverage for our 30,000 hourly restaurant employees. We're pleased and encouraged by the progress that's been made by the Federal government on this issue." Since the law does not take effect until 2014 the companies can apply for these waivers until then, which Cigna said it plans to do. I think this is just perfect. Eventually these companies will have to pay out huge sums of money annually for health care and somehow it will be paid for by the customer. I assume these companies think that the law will be tweaked by the new Congress and Senate that is about to come into term, which is probably true. Many economist and business majors told the President and those in Congress that this could happen, but they did not care! They did exactly what they wanted to do and that crappy bill became a crappy law. I am giving these waivers a Digit Down.
